RISO and the Progressive Bluegrass of “New Eyes”

I had Matt and Rebekah Rolland of RISO on my show to talk about their album New Eyes. The two have been bandmates since college and then went on to get married. Now they’re parents, musicians, and partners in a new project called RISO. Their brand of progressive bluegrass is moody. “Closer” is full of longing and “Always Running” is tense and angry. Rebekah’s vocals are consistently beautiful, fitting for a fan of Aoife O’Donovan.

Below is the full episode as aired on WUSB’s Country Pocket. You can hear the show live every Monday at 11am or check the blog to watch it as a YouTube playlist. As always with my show, I pick three songs off the album and have my guests pick some of their favorite music from other artists. My interview with the artist plays between the songs.
